Just shortly after our visit to Damyang fortress we found out that there is another fortress in our area. Gochangeupseong Fortress (고창읍성) in Gochang, Jeollabukdo is about an hour from Gwangju, Jeollanamdo.
Unlike Damyang fortress which is on the mountain top, Gochang fortress, built in 1453, is right in the residential area of Gochang. Just park your car, walk around the corner and you’re there!
Once inside the gate there are a variety of paths you can take to explore the area. Some bring you to temples and buildings within the grounds of the fortress, or to a bamboo forest with large trees towering overhead.
We were also really excited (probably more than most people would be!) to find that there is a dolmen inside the fortress walls! Dolmen are prehistoric tombs with the majority of them being made around 4000 – 3000 BC. While they can be found in Europe, Asia and Africa, Korea is home to 40% of the world’s dolmen. Most of these can be found in Gochang, Hwasun and Ganghwa. After the fortress visit we did drive out into the countryside to see the main dolmen site but it’s about 15 minute walk from the main parking area and we were getting tired and hungry so we just looked at it from afar.
Transportation by Bus
Take a bus to the Gochang Bus Terminal. Once there the fortress is a short walk or taxi ride.
